Can I have my annual rant about most of the populace firth of Scotland who cannot get the lyrics right in this song traditionally sung at New Year. The words "for the sake of" do not feature in the original verses by our national bard simply it is "for auld lang syne". Please, please try to get it right this year, another please!!, and now I will wish you a Blithe Yule and a Guid New Year.

A retentive festive season to you too.
Should we care ?
There are common lyrics and original ones.
somewhat prevenient isn't this.....don't pull your crackers, Mr Knox.
>>> "by our national bard"

I think not! It was a traditional song which Burns simply wrote down upon hearing an old man sing it. He may have added to it but he certainly didn't create it.

Are we, by your strict rules, Rich47, permitted to sing "my dear" after "For auld lang syne" or must we sing "my Jo" (which is what Burns copied down)?

A Cantie Yule and a Guid New Year to you, anyway ;-)
You tell 'em, rich!
I loathe that 'song' with a passion. If I hear it on TV or radio I immediately switch off. If the best Scotland can do for a national bard is an alcoholic syphilitic tax collector then they are sadly lacking in talent. Give me William Topaz McGonagal every time. That man was a genius!
'For the sake of' gets a pass anyway, in the face of Zyne.
It's there for all to see, an S not a Zee but zyne it will be, admittedly mostly by those who insist Brexit is Bregzit.

We'll now have a rousing rendition of Lock Lomond.
Choose your own key.
I also prefer William McGonagall to Robert Burns.
It's worth remembering that the present Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, is a Scot (and about a zillion times better than Burns).
douglas, may I have a chubb key in Lock/Loch Lomond?
What are the 'proper' words, Rich? I'd really like to know as I just mumble through most of it on the rare times that I sing the song.
I'm sure just as many people get the chorus of Rule Britannia wrong too!
Thank you, Buenchico and Tonyav. I will never mumble again during that tune, nor will I put 'for the sake of' into it, rich 47 :)
“ Oh father Who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name”

Well Cliff Richard certainly butchered that tune.
Thank heavens for your contribution, Douglas! Where the heck did the absurd word 'zyne' come from? In the song, it means 'since', not 'zince'.

Even some of your main stream press South of the border think you need to learn the words before Hogmanay.
How about that?
i do know the words but i'm not capable of pronouncing them when i sing at the witching hour ...

One of my pet soapbox rants, too (people putting in 'for the sake of').
I read the other day that most young people don't know the song at all, which is sadder.
