The Chancellor, upon being asked, refused to endorse Theresa May as a leader but did on another occasion say that "Theresa May has made it very clear that she has a job to do, I am completely behind her in doing that job."

Not much of a story on its own. But there are also rumours that 30 Tory MPs have signed a letter challenging May's leadership and that senior members of the cabinet are arranging for her departure. Even The Spectator (effectively an organ of the Tory party) has published leaders about the party reaching "civil war."

Is the media making a mountain of a molehill, or can we expect a serious challenge to May at conference this weekend?

Behind a paywall, but Sunday Times originally broke the story that the "big 4" cabinet members are plotting to replace May:

If a leadership challenge is coming, I do wonder if the pro-Brexit vote might get split between Davis, Johnson and Rees-Mogg (indeed this is why I strongly suspect JRM has been touted over the past few weeks - someone has obviously been making calls for him).

If it happens this weekend, I actually wonder if Hammond is the most likely winner for that reason.

Why was 3T's answer removed? There was nothing untoward in it.

Plus I now look like a lonely maniac posting replies to myself in my own thread. Cheers for that, anonymous mod.

This is a media-fuelled non-story. Theresa is clearly weakened by the election, but in the absence of any serious alternative (Boris- too many skeletons in the cupboard- that's why he didn't and will never stand for PM- , Davis- bumbling, haphazard) she should have the full backing of her team. A leadership challenge between now and Brexit gives JC another shot at the keys to number 10 (yes, it COULD happen if the turnout is low- folks are tired of elections). Leadership elections can do the sitting candidate more good than harm, look at Corbyn!
I'm really confused, my post was agreeing with the OP and I think I made a valid point.
It was her previous Chancellor that called her a Dead Woman Walking, so we shouldn't be too surprised that the Men in Grey suits are plotting against her.

I personally don't think that she will be stabbed in the back at next weeks Conference but common sense would dictate that she can't and won't last very long.
Hammond is too anti-Brexit to stand a chance, and has even less charisma than Theresa- as for Jacob, great chap that he is, he's never led anything in his life, and nothing to suggest that anyone really takes him seriously, which is a shame.
Kromo,
//Why was 3T's answer removed//Probably because of her refusal to use plain English,We are not all familiar with her version of slang.
Danny....I am as irritated as everybody else as TTT's constant invention of new slang, but he is clearly a chap, or was your last post an attempt at humour ?
No it was a typo MIkey.
Then that is OK, and I apologise profusely for doubting you ...... ( to be honest, it sounded like something one or two other AB regulars would have said, but not you ! )
well I'll repeat my original answer, but it may not stay here long as clearly there is something bad in it:
Yes I think a challenge must come. Following TMs disastrous election and this delay brexit suggestion is just about the icing on the cake. I suspect a challenge probably in the spring.

I hope that's not too offensive
Not offensive at all TTT, and if its removed, then I shall be the first to complain.
I would be the second to raise the issue if the first reply (now gone) was written in plain and clear language like the repeat.

I didn't see it however.
Due a couple of apologies, TTT.
I'm confused Mamya. Is there something in the Site Rules about using plain and clear language?
Perhaps it was done in error and the moderator could ask the Ed if she'd reinstate it and we could compare the two.

Just a thought.
I am basing my response blindly as I did not see what went - a reply above suggests it was not wholly intelligible, something the Editor has repeated asked certain posters to try to be.

Especially in serious topics.
I've sidetracked the topic enough - apologies Kromo.
