Why Is The Resolution Different On A Landscape Vs Portrait Photo When Using Ipad

Lets say I take a photo and then transfer it via a wifi card direct to my Ipad (Ipad 2) and then transfer it from the iPad (hardwire) straight to my Mac. Now imagine my surprise when I find that all the Landscape aspect photos are full normal resolution (39.7 cm wide, 350 dpi) but any photos taken Portrait aspect are resampled down to 72dpi (128 cm at their longest edge) . . . what the hell is going on! I tested the theory, bypassing the Ipad, and took identical photos with my camera using both aspects and then put them straight to the Mac and they were fine. Why on earth does the Ipad take the Portrait photos and alter them? is it coding or can this preference be changed?
