'Spose another theory is that Mags herself opted for a life of lovelorn privilege rather than romantic exclusion from the charmed circle. She wasn't famous for neglecting her own comfort - and, come to think of it, not all that lovelorn, either!
Oh come on....she was a classic case of prolonged mourning through serial monogamy. Had the royal granny allowed her to marry Peter Townsend (when she and the public both wanted it) she would have been a much happier lady. But then the milk of human kindness notoriously turns to yoghurt in the Bowes Lyon veins.
