Near Northampton on the M1, there are fields and fields of masts of all different sizes. Does anyone know what they are and what they do?

I believe it is a VLF (very low frequency) transmitting station, used for communicating with submarines, amongst other things. No doubt someone will be able to correct me or elaborate.

They are indeed VLF radio to communicate with submarines. Actually, all those masts and wires are a bit of an illusion as the actual aerial is just one length of wire from the ground to the top of just one mast (about 900 feet). Most of the rest of the masts and wires form a capacity hat needed to tune the aerial to VL frequency. A similar wire arrangement is buried around the mast bases to form the ground radials.
