What size socks please?

I have gone back to knitting socks. I just love it. Now - does shoe size relate to size of foot in inches. e.g. Does a man's size 10 shoe mean that his foot is 10 inches long please? Am knitting some for various people and don't want to have to ask each one their size. Thank you.

bigsister, this might sound off the wall but why don't you buy a pack of insoles, you know the ones you have to cut round the lines to fit in your size of shoes? That would show you the average size of a size 10 men's foot!

Mmm.... not sure about that chart sara3, just measured my foot from heel to toe and it is 10.5" but according to the chart size 9 is supposed to be 7".

Are you aware of a special way the foot has to be measures?
