Customised clothing illegal to sell?

Does anybody know if it would be illegal to use a basic item e.g. a plain pair of knickers, customise them beyond recognition and then sell them? or how about plain T-shirts when you customise them? Can it be sold or do you need to make the T-shirt yourself too?
