16:37 Mon 24th May 2010 |

If Paris didn’t have the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre it would still be famous for its fantastic array of shopping diversity. The world of chic fashion was born here, with no other city having so many exquisite shops and well known designers- it truly is a shopper’s paradise not just for Christmas gifts.

Peruse in Paris:

In the weeks and even months leading up to Christmas the dazzling streets of Paris are erupting with people who have come from all round the world to do their Christmas holiday shopping. From chic boutiques to elaborate department stores you are guaranteed to cross everything off your Christmas list in this magnificent city.

It is no surprise that during this festive time of the year, French retailers earn 25% of their entirely yearly earnings. Needless to say, anyone selling fashion, perfumes or anything deemed worthy of the title of being fashionable is going to do well.

In order to attract a larger clientele, everyone tries to outdo everyone else. The competition in Paris during the holiday season is fierce, but the one good thing is that all of it seems to put people in a festive mood. Les Galleries Lafayette is in direct competition with Printemps for shopper’s attention, but don’t forget the petite shops that let their creative sides flow in order to create something wonderful and unique that will catch the eye of a passing shopper.

Label lovers who have a passion for fashion and an eye for detail should head to Avenue Montaigne where some of the most desired designers can be found, such as Chanel, Chloe and Dior. This area has become a Mecca for anyone who has a keen interest in the world of fashion, and who has a specific item on the Christmas list that can only be found here.  If you prefer a more leisurely pace, let’s face it around the Christmas rush we are all looking for that then you will enjoy the small streets of the Marais, which offers a mix of kitsch and couture- you might just pick up a little something for yourself while you’re in this beautiful area of the city.

Slash out at Christmas:

If splashing out on fancy items isn’t on you’re to do list this Christmas then you can head to one of the wonderful markets that this city offers and pick up a bargain or two. There are several Christmas markets throughout France, boasting wonderful handcrafted ornaments, gifts and food items to take your fancy.

The markets in Paris usually start sometime between late November and early December, so this may be the best time to visit the city of light if you want to catch the dazzling beauty that the city possesses.  One of the largest markets in the city is Strasbourg with a breathtaking setting located in front of Strasbourg Cathedral-get a feel for the past while shopping for the present.

Another market that deserves a visit is Mulhouse, which is an Alsatian market that features vast shopping where you can pick up some unique gifts as well as the chance to sip some mulled wine and bredele (Christmas biscuits) - Who said shopping can’t be enjoyable.

Paris is one of the greatest cities in the world, where history, culture, art and shopping collide to create a fascinating and beautiful place that Christmas shopper’s swarm to year after year. With a laid back, relaxed atmosphere, and full of glamour and joy de vivre, the perfect destination for a Christmas shopping spree.
