I recently bourght a new single bed, the mattress was only 30 and i can feel the metal springs, i have about 100 to spend, so do i buy a new mattress and would i get a good one for that price, or do i buy one of those feather or foam mattress toppers, some of the feathered ones are up to 6"thick and it says they revive old mattresses, as i cant afford to make a mistake i would really appreciate any advice anyone has, and has anyone out there bourght a mattress topper and were they any good? my bed has wooden slatts.

Well you could get another mattress but a good one might be well over 100.

I have just got a duck feather mattress topper and I am very pleased with it. It is warm and very comfortable. All you need to do is shake it once a week to ensure the feathers are spread evenly.

Shop around though as there can be huge differences in price. I would have thought that a single one should only cost 35 - 45
I too doubt you would get a decent mattress for 100 or so. A topper would be a much better bet. When I had a bed with wooden slats I bought a sort of thick felt thing you placed on them & then the mattress on top. I think IKEA sell them in England.
I would buy a good topper. I had one of those slatted beds and they are THE most uncomfortable beds going.

The topper would soften the base a bit.

Sweet dreams

It's fair to say that you wouldn't get a decent mattress for 100, but have you thought about a memory foam mattress topper? They don't compact down like feather ones, and are THE most comfortable things to lie on. I reckon you could get a reasonable one with the money you have.

iv already swopped the slattered single bed for my sons divan (hes away for awhile), although the divan is about 5 yrs old its so much more comfy, i might still try a topper of 1 kind or another thanks for everyones help i wouldent of thourght of swopping if it wasent for your advice thanks again xx
I'd be careful buying a matress topper...you may be putting good money after bad.

Have a look at the Argos site they have a selection of single matresses for about 100...some of them look decent (silent night etcc) and are 1/2 price on offer at the moment..
i purchased a mattress topper from www.sleepdetox.co.uk, they made me a mattres topper to my measurements as the bed i have is an unusual size. the company is a manufactuer you can haggle on the price to some degree ( i did)

Mattress toppers from what I know are mostly made of latex. Descriptions of some of them you can find http://mattressesguid...atex-mattress-topper/ Media URL: http://mattressesguide.com/latex-mattress-topper/
Description:
The trouble with feather toppers is that the feathers move about, and you may end up feeling the springs again. Your best bet would probably be a reflex foam topper (not memory foam)
What size mattress do you have?
I presume that if you only paid £30, that it is a single?
As with anything in life, the answer lies in common-sense.
A $30 mattress is hugely unlikely to provide you with the support you need.
Although it is true that a mattress topper can rejuvenate an old bed, it would be a bit foolish to put a brand new high quality topper on a terrible mattress.

It's like buying $4000 tires for a $200 car...

Could get one of these as they're relatively cheap, but a great quality.
What do you think?
Sorry, but you are wrong Wfit. You should NEVER use a topper to try and revive an old worn out mattress. This is because a topper doesn't give you support, and without support you will get back problems.

The support from the mattress is far more important than the comfort layer.
