I've decided if there is going to be another heatwave after these two current days, then I'm going to get a unit. They are heavily expensive, but I want to know if they're worth purchasing.

We have a mobile unit (purchased 15+ years ago) which gets used only when temperatures rise above about 30C. Today, it will be 38C in the shade, bedrooms will be high 20s and my downstairs living area will be about 20C. Yes, a bit pricey to run (but no different to putting the heating on when it's very cold) - only you can decide if you fancy being so cool in these...

Could you be a tad more vague please?
I've only had aircon in hotel bedrooms abroad. More comfortable temperature-wise but I found it a bit noisy & sometimes too cold.
Cheap unit and unable to use a remote?
We've got one but rarely use it. My daughter does and occasionally we cool a room down for the grandkids.

Buying isnt the problem, they are not cheap to run. You also need a way to vent the hot air on a mobile unit.
they are very energy intensive which at the moment is perhaps not helpful… if energy prices are different in a few years it might be worth it.

a good and energy efficient fan will keep you cool without costing so much!

Yes, a bit pricey to run (but no different to putting the heating on when it's very cold) - only you can decide if you fancy being so cool in these extremely hot periods.
These units also dehumidify at the same time as cooling- which makes things that more comfortable.
Be sure to get one with an inverter drive. They are much more efficient.
I bought one for my office a couple of weeks ago, nice and cool.
My dil has one & it is only used on hot days. Hers has a long tube which dangles out the window. Slightly noisy and yes very expensive to run .
Works though, room was very chilly.
Yes & yes.
But get proper portable air conditioning with an exhaust pipe or two, not one of those evaporation types.

But by the time it's delivered, naturally the British summer will be over for this year.
Also, you’ll be paying ‘top dollar’ if you order one at the moment.
that's right ZM, the one I bought is now £220 more than I paid!
I'd not normally recommend Robert Dyas as a first stop...but they have decent specced air-cons at reasonable prices...cheapest are out-of-stock, but still several to be had (but won't help today and tomorrow!).
How much is a decent one ?
