Get ones with combination locks and you can set them all to the same number...and not worry about losing the key!

You should be aware that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in the United States reserves the right to open your checked-in baggage when you are not present.

If that means smashing locks; damaging the case or otherwise by-passing your security, they will do that. It has happened to me.

It's not pretty to see your case on the baggage carousel opened, with many of your belongings spilling out. Adhesive tape clumsily wrapped around the case to keep it "secure". And even worse to use the damaged case for onward travel.

If you have any intention of using the security locks while travelling to the US, be sure to get TSA-compliant locks.

These are usually combination locks, with a specialised key system to which only TSA personnel have access (at least in theory).
UK Customs also have a way of opening combinations luggage locks
UK "Customs" have no need to open suitcases with combination locks. The TSA open cases for security reasons (post 9/11) pre flight.
