Returning A Package To An Ebay Seller

I need to return some bedding that I bought on eBay, due to the fitted sheets being 4" too small in width to fit my mattress. The seller accepts returns but expects me to pay the postage, which I find reprehensible since it's his sheets that are too small. It won't be cheap sending them back either since there's a duvet cover, two fitted sheets, and two extra pillowslips.

The seller did give the size of the sheets in the description, but I took it for granted that sheets sold as 'double' would fit a double mattress. It turns out that some double mattresses are bigger than others; mine's 4' 6" wide and the sheets would fit a mattress that's only 4'0", and there can't be many 4'0" mattresses about. In any case, he gave the measurements in centimeters, which is difficult to understand and estimate.

Shall I just keep the bedding and give him negative feedback (something I've never done before to an eBay seller)?

As they are as described and not faulty you have no legal right to the cost of return postage.
I am also not sure why you’d give negative feedback if you dimensions the seller gave are correct? I don’t find it reprehensible that you have bought the wrong thing so should pay to return it.

I don't think the seller was descriptive enough, he should have made it clear that the sheets were for a 4'0" mattress

And not for a standard 4'6"
4'0" is not a double, it's a "small double". Sizes are listed here:

http://www.bedtimesuperstores.co.uk/blog/post/uk-standard-bed-sizes-and-dimensions/

I'm not sure you could rely on that list in a court of law, or even the court of eBay, but I would say that if they were listed as "double" then they were not as described.
all the measurements are there.....
On the Debenhams website a double sheet is also 200 x 200 cm

http://www.debenhams.com/content/home-size-guide?popup=y

Is your mattress very deep?
Question Author
And he gave the measurements in centimeters, which is being duplicit
His sizes appear to be odd
Single Fitted Sheet: 90cm x 190cm
Double Fitted Sheet: 137cm x 200cm
King Fitted Sheet: 150cm x 200cm
Super King Fitted Sheet: 180cm x 200cm

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedding this lists the usual bedding sizes.
That links shows the measurements for fitted sheets as...

Double Fitted Sheet: 137cm x 200cm which is 4'6" x 6'6"

"On the Debenhams website a double sheet is also 200 x 200 cm"

Actually, that's the duvet cover, but it does describe the fitted sheets as being '190 x 137 cm'. It also mentioned that 137 cm = 53", i.e. 4'6"! Mr eBay seller's sheets are also described as '137 cm'. Therefore, if 137 cm REALLY DOES eqal 4'6", then the goods aren't as described!
A double bed is 137 x 190 cm.

John Lewis describes their fitted double sheets as "to fit a mattress of this size": http://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-200-thread-count-polycotton-standard-fitted-sheet/p2657447?colour=Duck%20Egg

The eBay seller describes their fitted double sheets as "being" this size, rather than being to fit a mattress of this size: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131326008064?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&var=430632349983&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT#rpdCntId

I'd say the eBay seller was being deceptive - maybe not deliberately, but they've described it as a double when it isn't.
As I asked earlier, have you got a very deep mattress?

I think you may need to contact eBay and ask for advice.
I agree you should contact them , if that measurement includes the depth then it either won't fit or if stretched will tear and/ or ping off.
you were presented the facts..you did not check...the vendor is not culpable..
My double mattress is 4'6 wide but double sheets just don't fit because it is very deep.

Hi there, hc4361

No, it's standard depth. if the sheets were wide enough, then they would fit
If they clearly stated the facts and you did not check then I really don't think you have grounds for a refund on return postage costs. I think you should try understand it was you in the fault here and try not passing the blame onto the seller. We all make mistakes.
