How much would you spend on an engagement ring? Carat weight? Somebody said a months salary? Does it has to be diamonds?

Somebody ask me this recently, what are your views?

Thanks

A month's salary is the traditional way and that's what my fiance did.  I read an interview with a jewellery designer in a newspaper just the other day and he said that most people now spend between 3 and 15 grand - I think the people he associates with must be pretty rich!  Really what matters is how happy you are with the ring, not the cost.  They don't have to be diamonds although again that's traditional - mine is three diamonds and a ruby.  If you're gonna buy a diamond the things to look for are cut, colour, clarity and carat - here's a page with a bit more info:

i like diamonds, as for price i am not fussed as long as i like it!
A nice emerald would do it for me. Everyone has diamonds
hey jean88 - - people traditionally say one months sallary - for me it's about the love (mushy I know) and personally, if my boyf ever asked me to marry him, the material price of the ring would mean nothing to me.  It would be what is behind it (take me to Hatton Garden!!).
