I accept the theory of evolution but am confused as to how dinosaurs fit into this given that they inhabited the earth for approx 150 million years?

can someone give a semi-basic explanation- no fundamentalist religious answers please!

I think many species evolved at much the same time. Dinosaurs died out but others survived including sharks and crocodiles which haven't changed much at all.

Question. If we evolved from apes, why are there still apes ??

We did not evolve from all apes, and all other living organisms are subject to mutation and survival of the fittest.

the dinosaurs themselves evolved.  there were thoussands of species that changed over time before they all died out.

Caramba the apes that we and the other apes evolved from died out long ago.  we are not descended from chimps, they are as highly evolved as we are.

Winter.
Sorry, they've put my answer in the wrong place.
Dinosaurs evolved from earlier life forms in much the same way as humans evolved from earlier apes who evolved from still earlier shrew-like mammals. They were incredibly successful but were exterminated after the comet/asteroid collision about 65 million years ago. That particular branch of life came to an end (except for the birds of course... who are dinosaurs in all but name) while ours persisted and spread to fill the evolutionary niches that the dinosaurs left behind.
