Bill Bryson's a brief history of everything is a good all round read.
Turn left at Orion as a good starters astronomy book
Cosmos by Carl Sagan

A Brief History of Time by Steven Hawking

Stardust by John Gribbin

physics for the enquiring mind. It large but covers most of physics and astronomy with clear explanations. I got a copy when I was a school, understnadable then, but goes far beyond.

I would strongly recommend "How The Universe Got Its Spots" by Janna Levin. Very accessible and understandable book about cosmology and quantum physics - its the only science book I have read twice, just for the sheer pleasure.

Try this www.abduct.com/books/b45.htm

It was written in the 70's so is not exactly up to date. But once I started reading it I couldn't put it down.
