when you see a plain high in the sky is the vapour trail a standerd length thay all seem to be about the same.?thank you for your time

No. Vapour trails vary in length,depending on exhaust temperature,fuel burn etc. Also note,different lengths on different days, air temperature and humidity count towards the length as well.

I thought plains were usually found on the ground.

I see a lot of planes in the air, though.
