Multiplication.
I'm sort of old school...Has x been replaced by *?
Multiplying is * on Excel spreadsheet
Ah, OK, thanks, Bobb.
Why you asking degreen?
Common sense? I failed maths GCE 1st time, but looked at that and saw a simple multiplication. Trouble is that modern minds keep on wanting to change things. 9x9x9 would have been easily comprehensible. Senseless, to me, to lose the 'x' sign.
In this case it is 9 cubed. Is cubing an acceptable mathematical function?
That would be written 9^3 though, Captain2
or 9³
9^3 is how you show it on Excel
Same end result though SD? I'm only playing with names; hopefully, although I doubt it, degreen will enlighten us further.
I just thought I was being logical.
Been no mention of Excel, bobb.
DAVE, it would normally be shown as 9³, your version is what like it would be in an excel spreadsheet.
Mamya, you are more than likely correct. I'm more amazed that degreen didn't recognise it.
//Been no mention of Excel, bobb.//

not by degreen but several post's have used excel notation here
Since the OP was in Excelspeak, it seemed logical to express cubing the same way - I agree that the superscripted ³ is the more usual way in non-spreadsheet usage.
//not by degreen but several post's have used excel notation here//

at the time of my post, bobb, just your goodself.
...And degreen and sunnydave with his9^3...but it would help to know what degrene is asking for
I've seen ×,x and * used on various sites, I suppose it depends on the context and what the writer uses most often or what the style-guide dictates.
Mamy gave the answer in the very first post. There's no issue here. Multiplication (aka timesing) can be indicated by different notations, e.g. * or x or X or .
End of.
:-)
