I cant help but I am really curious to know what plans you have for his DNA.

Don't go away, I'm sure someone with the right answer will be along soon ;o)
Depends on how long you want to keep it ans whether you need regular access. For longer term storage you need extremely cold storage (like -160 C) and storage in Tris-EDTA or ethanol- or store it dried
Is he still alive? If so don't store him in the way I suggested above - not yet anyway
Have you tried vinegar in a Kilner jar?
^remove the pickled onions first
Encapsulating in amber seems to work well.
Anika, why would you want to? If you really do, you should ask for medical or scientific advice, not ask on AB. Best wishes.
Yiu can find folk with expertise here too.

Meanwhile I'm wondering if this is about the OP http://www.metrolyrics.com/im-my-own-grandpa-lyrics-ray-stevens.html
I thought DNA lasted for ever - haven't scientists discovered stuff about prehistoric animals using DNA ?. Not that I'm suggesting your grandfather's a dinosaur ;-)
hair, nails, teeth or a pedicure might gather enuf derma for dna
Not forever. The older stuff happened to be in conditions it stayed ok. Under the most ideal conditions, DNA can theoretically survive for a million years.
Pluck out a few hairs
that is pull and dont cut
put in a brown dry envelope
label envelope

the hair follicle roots have enough DNA for analysis

( and the mitochondria are clonal but that is a separate issue)
I cant help but I am really curious to know what plans you have for his DNA.

@maydup i wanted to preserve my grandfathers DNA in a hope that someday in the future he could be brought back to life, you have already seen how science progressed in the last 90 years, so
If he could be 'recreated' from his DNA it wouldn't be him. It would be another person with the same DNA.

We are partly a result of our DNA, and partly from our upbringing.
Nice thought anik, but it wouldn't work I'm afraid.
>in a hope that someday in the future he could be brought back to life.

Interesting thought. Do you mean as a new born baby or as an old man or something else?
Identical twins have the same DNA but aren't the same person.

Much of someone is made up of their life experiences too. It affects how they think and act; the person that they are.
