NASA has just released images of a black hole located in a distant galaxy.

It measures 40 billion km across - three million times the size of the Earth - and has been described by scientists as "a monster". The black hole is 500 MILLION TRILLION km away.

Logically, do those enormous distances not encourage the creationist fraternity to wonder if they’re mistaken? Do they not ask why, from this whole unimaginably vast universe, a creator God would have selected this minute speck of dust located somewhere near the outer reaches of a fairly minor galaxy – just one of an estimated 2000 billion galaxies each containing billions of stars – as home to his beloved(?) creation – man?

Personally, I cannot believe we’re that special. What say you?

theres a lot of creationist stuff out there (on you tube) that believes its all fake science. …

Why a God could create a universe so unimaginably large and then care about us wearing garments made of two different materials or sowing two different crops in the field or chopping the ends of our penis's off became absurd to me when I started to question it all.
//Logically, do those enormous distances not encourage the creationist fraternity to wonder if they’re mistaken?//

Evidently not!
When you read stuff like this and realise anew how vast the universe is and how it seemingly goes on and on and on, then it IS hard to imagine a God who supposedly created us and keeps his eye on us ! I personally don't believe in God, but I do believe there is something 'out there' after death, but how it fits in with all this vastness is totally beyond me. A melon scratcher alright !
They don't ask that though, they just say look at that lovely black hole God created on the 4th day.
With you all the way on this one, Naomi. I've always argued that if God truly exists, surely he would have put intelligent life-forms on more than just one tiny planet.
//surely he would have put intelligent life-forms on more than just one tiny planet//
Reading some creationist stuff, I wonder if he put intelligent life on THIS planet??
I ponder the same question every time i visit Blackburn, nailit :-)
^^Try coming to Stoke sometime ken ;-)
Douglas Adams had it about right:-

“Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.”
There is a poem out there somwhere which I cannot find which suggests that god sent his son to more than just earth...and ponders in the fact that there are an infinite number of worlds and that right now somwhere in the universe, Jesus is being born, crucified and rising again.
//Jesus is being born, crucified and rising again//
Must be getting a bit miffed by now at having to be executed time and again. I would!

By way of explanation, this question has arisen from something Khandro said to me on the related thread in Science.

//naomi; It is interesting that you admit you don't understand this phenomenon, and yet you are certain that the universe contains no higher power(s)//

…to which I replied:

// we have a very definite picture of something there. Show me a picture of the higher power you refer to and I'll consider that too.//

Rather than disrupt that thread, I’ve moved the topic here. All are, of course, welcome to contribute.

Woofgang at 17:51, I'm familiar with that suggestion. Rotten job.
Mushroom25, you ponder divine Groundhog Day.
SORRY, that should be Woofgang
BBC4 tonight has some good stuff to watch, including "How to See a Black Hole".
"Why a God could create a universe so unimaginably large ..."

Maybe it turns out that if you create something you inevitably find you've created everything, and then need somewhere to put it.
Bazille @ 17;53. "How do you know he hasn't?" Because he told me when we last chatted over a pint of John Smith's Extra Smooth.
