Sound carries through air, the moon has no atmosphere. The astronauts were wearing suits filled with air so they could hear sound from speakers/earphones within them. A speaker at full blast a short distance away from the astronauts would emit no sound at all.

Did you hear him say, " One small step for man..." ?
Ah, but that was a Hollywood sound stage, OG.
As a kid I was convinced it was so.

May have had something to do with watching The Clangers.
Prog Rock can be heard on the dark side of it.

Oh sorry, you mean when out of the suit and trying to speak/breath the near vacuum atmosphere ? Very little of the gasps would be heard due to the rarity of gas molecules, but I don't think anyone's tried it. Essentially no. Although sound might travel via the solid ground surface if you put your ear to it.
sound is essentially vibration so to hear a sound there needs to be a medium. If, for example you were able to exists ion the moon withiout a space suit then if you shouted a near by sans space suit person could not hear it. If you hit a rock with a hammer then ity would be heard if your compatriots ear was touching the rock. Generally though for all intents and purposes the answer is no.
A vacuum is an area without any air, like space. So sound cannot travel through space because there is no matter for the vibrations to work in.
But to answer the main OP

"Is it possible for sounds to be heard on the Moon ?"

Yes it is certainly possible.
Is this one step beyond asking if a tree falls in a forest with no-one around does it make a noise?
No, because the answer to that Prudie is yes, unless you're ignorant enough to think the universe revolves around the observation of humans.

If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? Yes because some animal, plant or other possibility will be present. Unless the tree was on its own, in an endless void, in a vacuum.
I have always believed that argument is madness, Prudie
Wo - wasn't expecting to be called ignorant!! It was meant to be a light hearted post spath and that problem has been discussed at length long before you started web searching. The argument has always been if no living thing is around to hear it fall.
Don't worry, Prudie...it's only spath.
but is the tree not living?
Rookie error prudie, trying to might a light-hearted joke about Zen Buddhist philosophy in any thread that spath is reading :P
Does the moon even exist if no one is looking at it? Hurr Durr
spathiphyllum
but is the tree not living?

Aye...living the dream it is.
Do trees have ears then?
Trees communicate with each other, they 'talk' about nutrients and their needs. If / when this tree is / was falling, you'd assume it was aware it was about to fall, so you'd assume it would let foliage on the ground know as well as other trees around it.
