Horse Chestnut 'water-Belly'

When I was a boy in the 1960's we collected conkers from horse chestnut trees. Sometimes the chestnut would be full of liquid instead of flesh. We referred to such a conker as a water-belly and discarded them. What would have caused this anomaly?
