I've always wanted to blow up the moon! Just wondering what the potential side effects would be of such an endeavour!

Obviously the tides would stop moving but what else would happen?

Cheers

the werewolves would be pretty miffed.
James Bond would get you?
Well- you'd probably get your own show on Channel Four.
It would ruin loads of romantic songs.
Tides would be substantially reduced but they would not stop.
It would be very dark every night as no moonlight.
There'd be a lot of cheese floating about
We'd get a nice ring

Also the Earth and the moon rotate about a common centre of gravity inside the Earth, so this point would change which would result in some pretty significant long term climate changes.

Exactly what those would be it is probably not possible to calculate as they'd be chaotic

Can people please not post absolute W@ nk on my thread. this is a science section not a kids section. Thanks.

Cheers Jake. I knew this section was populated by some people with intelligence so am glad someone has answered properly! How bad do you think it could get for Earth? would our centre of gravity move then?
Does this help????? I wouldn't fancy being an owl!!!!!

Slight problem with being a nocturnal animal - no nighttime!!!
That's too hypothetical to give a serious answer to, especially as such motions can be chaotic (not predictable)

If you look up Milankovitch cycles you'll see there are a number of long term variations to do with the Earth's long term orbit. These would obviously be affected
A lot depends on how small the remaining pieces were. Most, because of reduced gravity would float off into space or form a ring similar to Saturn's. Others, if they were large enough, would crash into the earth causing devastation.
There would be a much reduced tidal range as the main contributor to the tides would then be the Sun and 93,000,000 miles is a long way.
Earth may also become unstable in its orbit and that would be the end of life as we know it.
Please don't do it. Thanks.
you don't want childish answers, just look at your first sentence
'I've always wanted to blow up the moon!'
Now THAT is childish.

Hmm I have given it some thought....and I shall stop. I now have to find something else to focus on blowing up!
I really like Aba's answer to your question.

And with statements like Ive always wanted to blow up the moon what would you expect other than child like answers.
Bloody Irish.....always looking to blow something up.

I asked something tongue in cheek. What i got back was drivvel about mythical creatures. Most people that frequent this section are extremely clever and have helped out loads with other hypothetical questions. I couldn't beleive how poor the answers I received back were!
This would REALLY mess up the world's economy!!

If you read your own question again you'll realise you're inviting some of the remarks you got.

You even go on to say;
'I now have to find something else to focus on blowing up!'

Very scientific!

You have to realise that there isn't a team of scientists hovering over their laptops waiting for you to ask a question.

I'm sorry if I upset you with my previous remarks. No harm was intended.
