I want to buy my husband a telescope for his birthday, i don't need anything mega expensive but I haven't a clue what to look for, any suggestions, thanks

What is he using it for, bird watching or star gazing? Search in Wiki for telescopes should give you a good idea the type you want.

If you have a Jessop's or a Jacobs' near you you could have a look in there.

argos do reasonable priced telescopes that would more than satisfy a beginners curiosity

I would suggest the Hubble Space Telescope as that is the best one I know of. Is that too expensive for you?

Try searching on AB as this question was dealt with (for astronomy) a few months ago. Needless to say no one agreed with anyone else.
