If there wasn't any mating of people of different races or possibly breeds of dogs for example, would there come a point when we/they would become different species?

I would think so, but how many generations would this take?

No.
People are all human, just different shapes, sizes and colours so, no, I don't think they would.
in total isolation with differing environmental stresses and with no attempt to preserve those least equipped to survive genetic drift would result in separation into sub species but it is unlikely separation into fully separate species would result but best guess it would take tens of thousands of years to happen

Rowan, first it would be like donkeys and horses mating where they can produce offspring, but they aren't fertile, eventually they'll become so different they can't breed at all, me thinks.
I think if you try to define the 'races' of humans you will find it difficult if not impossible. What we call races are really just extreme examples of people showing particular characteristics. As for humans evolving into different species, it is as possible as it is with any species but will only occur if there there is evolutionary pressure such that some characteristics are favoured over others. Whilst humans have ease of transport and interculural communications it seems that it is less likely to happen now than in the past.

Plus with medicine and IVF (ggrrr) in particular, humans aren't evoloving with survival of the fittest anymore . . .
Molly ....Survival of the fittest always applies.. it is unavoidable.

Not really when ill people that can barely look after themselves have kids or worse still have fertility treatment . . .
Question Author
Only in poor countries where people can't afford technology and medicine is it still happening i think, discounting people such as babies who don't live very long due to some terrible illness . . .
Another well-thought out molly-post..........
I thought I was fairly mentally alert today but I'm having trouble with this post......
its said of animals: grey/white animals are highly strung, chestnuts/red are hot tempered, bay/brown/black are even tempered & placid.

If we're all coffee we might be peaceful.......nearly there ?
and me Mrs O:) So what's your boggle with people who have fertility treatment Molly, hardly a hanging offence is it to want to have children?
Question Author
I don't agree with fertility treatment, i didn't say the people who have it are all bad, just that it might not be the best idea if you're not healthy.
The expression "They walk amongst us and they breed" comes to mind. My head hurts.
Oh the clear cut, black and white world of the young.......

So why are people that require fertility treatment unhealthy molly????

Surely it is worse if druggies or the like have kids that are born dependent on drugs!!!!

When you grow up and understand life maybe you could come back and answer your own pathetic questions. Until then please go and chat with your chums in the virgin section of the students forum.
Oooh, that was a bit harsh HH!
Okay molly, but do you have reasons WHY you 'don't agree with fertility treatment'? Do you disagree with all medical intervention, or just that and is it morally based or a religious decision. Just seems a bit of a blanket staement.
