Fred says to Bert: "See Tom, Dick and Harry there, they all live in Myrtlebank Crescent, just as we do. The numbers of their houses add up to twice the number of your house, and multiplied together their three numbers = 1260. The numbers of all five houses are different". Bert says: "Yes, but that doesn't tell me what their house numbers are". Fred replies: "True, but it will if I tell you that the number of my house is greater than that of any of the other four". Wanted: the house numbers of Fred, Bert, Tom, Dick and Harry.

Tom, Dick and Harry live in numbers 7, 12 and 15. Bert lives in number 17 and Fred lives in any number from 18 upwards.

Thank you juliefer for your rapid answer. I'm ashamed to have to tell you that when I copied the text from a typewritten sheet I missed out a crucial line. In too much of a hurry as usual.

"Myrtlebank Crescent has house numbers 2 - 50."

The fact that there is no house number 1 will make a difference to the result in that you will be able to arrive at numbers for the houses of Fred and Bert. For those of Tom, Dick and Harry you'll get three numbers, but you can't tell whose is which.
