An enthusiastic (but evasive) Handbaglady kicked off the month with lean pickings. Under her nom de plume of The Lady Radley, she set an opening round entitled “It’s in the Bag!” in which she chose the link words:

Hand MADE
LUCKY Bag
DINNER Lady
PRIVY Purse

A few entrants have already sussed the link between Handbags and the name of Radley; they were invariably female and must have expensive tastes! In general, each game of four detected links means that at least four entrants will reach the scoreboard, in fact in this particular game a total of only SIX entrants were that lucky!

Surprisingly, the first 16 entrants (all big names in Linksland) failed to scrape a point up between them. It was joto (in charge of the PRIVY PURSE) to first show a profit ~ closely followed by new-comer grannydi’s better half, grandaddyjohn, hitting gold with LUCKY BAG. Each will receive their TWO POINT reward. Ten minutes later, the intrepid Dinkypuzzled served up on a plate DINNER LADY that got its just desserts, to be later repeated by boxtops for One Point.

Throughout the entire game, only ex-champion, ladyalex, picked up another Single Point (for Privy Purse). With the game well underway, there came a ray of light across the Atlantic when Bert Ont-ice confessed that his offering was HOME MADE for the final TWO POINTS. In games as tight as this, I tend to award the coveted title of HOT SHOT OF THE WEEK to the predictor of the very last link ~ in this case, it is Bert O!

*** The peasants cheer and shout “Encore” ***

The League Table after this first week is:

TWO POINTS: BertOnt-ice, Dinkypuzzled, grandaddyjohn & joto
ONE POINT: boxtops & ladyalex
Everyone else is joint seventh.

Lately, I have been concerned with attending to “family business” and during this time my MM Links duties have been covered out by my esteemed friend and colleague, gen2. I wish you to know that early this morning my 84-year-old mother, Vera, passed away peacefully in her sleep. I shall be travelling up to Tyneside some time this week to attend the funeral. In the meantime, I am sure that my MM Linkers will close ranks and ensure that the show will go on.

For the present, this is crofter signing off.
Thank you Crofter and the Lady Radley
BUT
there were no "Sweet Pickings" for me

(confused? Lady Radley will understand!!)
Very little points for anyone then! Very sorry to hear about your mum Crofter - I am sure everyone on AB will be thinking of you at this sad time.
Thank you for my Dinner Lady point - onwards and upwards!
Thankyou crofter and Lady Radley Zilch for me

My thoughts are with you crofter at this sad time
crofter, in my rush to post that last item, I forgot to say how sorry I was to read of your mother passing away.
Please forgive me but condolences to you and your family.

So DIY Bert got HOMe MADE points?

Methinks a typo there Crofter.

And while we are talking typos, when I entered HAND MAIDEN, I really meant HAND MAID - aren't those in any way equivalent? ;-)

Thank you Crofter and Handbaglady. I promise to try harder next weekend.
Sorry to hear of your news, crofter. My thoughts are with you and your family. There has been a bit in the press lately of why photographs are not routinely taken at funerals, and replies have been encouraging in that seeing the pictures brings back memories of family and friends who attend, and aids in the grieving process ; so I hope that you , or a family friend, will do the same and honour your mother in the process. All best wishes.
My apologies Crofter, I didn't read your last paragraph before posting the above (because I was impatient and that post of yours hadn't yet appeared.

Forgive my selfishness and my sincere condolences on your recent bereavement.

Let me know if you need my help to cover next weekend.

(But be warned that I am switching ISPs on Thursday so fingers crossed that there are no impediments.)
Thank you Your Ladyship, and crofter. I was sorry to hear your news about your mother and will be thinking of you.

Continuing on from last month, still no points!

I shall be away in Northern Ireland next weekend and don't know if I will be able to get a connection with my laptop (I have found out that there is no mobile broadband coverage in the country areas I shall be visiting, therefore it's a case of if I can find a wireless network I can 'piggy-back' on).
Sincere condolences Crofter on your sad loss.
Well nothing for me as usual but 'himself' now known as grandaddyjohn- though he prefers to be called grandpajohn- is polishing his halo.
I am so sorry tp hear about your Mum crofter. I will be thinking of you in the days ahead.
grannydi
Crofter - many commiserations on your mother's passing
will be thinking of you this week.

For The Lady Radley I can only say again - Ouch!!

But to Ont-ice many congratulations - have you begun
battening down yet for your winter - in Rockford we figured
to be all sealed up by Thansgiving

Sorry to hear about your mother, Crofter. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers over this coming week.
A sad day for you, Crofter. But your Mum was lucky to have such a caring son.
