Sorry-I didnt want to post spoilers-
The answers are PALACE and AURORA respectively
p.a. = per annum = yearly
lace = thrash

aura = air
or = before (inside
6a, yearly = Per Annum, to lace is to thrash.

36a, air = aura, before = or, so aur(or)a
Aurora is goddess of dawn, so dawn.
If someone as an air of something it is called their aura and if you stifle (cut down) the word before you have or. That is how I would justify this clue.
Accoring to the OED, or = "At a former time, on a former occasion; formerly, previously, before; = ERE (Obs.)"
Or "according", as it is often correctly spelled.
thanks dr b. I thought that this was cutting down the word before to or, but now learn it has the extra meaning.
chambers defintion:

or
conj (or adv) and prep
before (in time).
