Can anyone help with Spectator crossword 1914 21a please?
Learn with tape, receiving firm test (two words) S?ED?OAT
I can only think of seed coat but if so, why? (something to do with testa?)
Advance thanks to fellow Speccie fans.

Yes, test is another word for testa in Chambers and that is a seed coat - I thought it was rather obscure, too.
learn = see, tape = DAT, firm = co, SEE D(CO)AT = test = "Bot. The skin of a seed: = TESTA 1. rare."
by way of further explanation, DAT = "Digital audio tape; a recording made in this format."
