"Drunken sailors" have been removed from the lyrics of a nursery rhyme in a government-funded books project."

What shall we do with the grumpy pirate?

I just give up.............pathetic!!!
Oh lets trot out the pantomime villains again and see who's the first to shout

"PC Brigade"

We can't have them messing with the classics can we?
I'm with them on this one, the sailors might have been Black or Minority Ethnic, but a pirate can only possibly be white. Unless off the coast of Somalia. Isn't life complicated?
Am I the only person now humming this in an annoying fashion to my collegues?
you have to laugh , they have started selling beer at 1pence a pint

what about "enee menee minee mo" then? The kids have got the words wrong these days! something about cathing a pig by it's toe!
They are sooooo behind the times.

This little booklet first came out in October, for National Bookstart Day, which took the theme of Pirates. The National Bookstart scheme, for those of you who aren't aware, is aimed at introducing a love books to under fives.

If playgroup leaders had gone out there teaching kids to find humour and fun in the antics of drunks, then they'd have had complaints from the other end, viz, a vocal minority of anal retentive parents.

Sometimes, you can't do right for doing wrong.
This might, on the surface, seem like a bit of a none story.

I believe that it is quite the opposite. It is another step in rewriting history; an area which our Government seem very keen on.

I once read the novel 1984 and in that book there was a Ministry of Truth - their job was to edit history so that it conformed to the modern-day way of thinking. Or, to put it another way, the falsification of history. Or Lies. Or Deceit.

And this is a small demonstration this warped way of thinking.

By changing the lyrics of the song, we are attempting to alter our perception of history through the medium of Political Correctness.

It is a fact that anyone can discover; sailors in the past were given large rations of alcohol. Being at sea for months at a time with not a lot to do punctuated with the occasional bought of bloody warfare, alcohol was probably a nice reward at the end of the day.

But now, the fact that alcohol was drunk by sailors (and still is, of course) is being perpetuated as a myth.

Maybe I read too much into these things. But I'm starting to think that 1984 is really happening.

The only difference is that Orwell was out by about 25years.
^^ What he said.

This makes interesting reading.

Intoxicated sailor (perfectly normal socially acceptable professional) replaced with a pirate (antisocial criminal). How is this more politically correct?

I have long wondered at the way pirates are portrayed in literature and movies. Much better our children become pirates than sailors or course.

Why not grumpy sailor if they don't like the drunken bit. What is it about sailors that is so undesirable?
Since the matter of the pirates in Somalia has been brought up.

Watching them hack open the container that held the ransom, and then escaping in their open boat, got me thinking.

Why couldn't these tankers have a weapon of a fair sized caliber hidden away? It could then be brought out when the pirates vessel was well away from the ship, and then used to blast them out of the water.

The ransom would be lost of course but it is lost anyway, but at least the pirates will have received their just deserts.
what have they done with baa baa black sheep ?? anyone know ?
I don't have a problem with Political Correctness when it is correctly used. It's original purpose was to attempt to be fair to everyone a noble cause indeed.

But what has happened is that the original goal has been forgotten and been replaced by a veritable army of zealots who think that they know what and how you should think. The laudable aims of PC have been hijacked by a group of people who view the world in such an inverted way that they seem to think that even the most morally corrupt ideas (such as re-writing history) are acceptable.

It's a warped way of thinking that causes otherwise rational people to think that references to 'drunken sailors' can somehow encourage drinking.

Or that using the word 'Yobs' to describe groups of violent, inconsiderate, antisocial, feral children, is somehow discriminatory [see naomi24's post for info.].

It's another example of a genuinely good idea that has been mangled and manipulated to such an extent that it no longer resembles itself.

Political Correctness in most people's minds is a bad thing purely because nefarious people have used it and still use it to further their own agendas.

PC is no longer about being fair to people.

It's a method of social control.
