Thanks to you all. I now have h as the 1st letter of the 2nd word of 9d and possibly l (for love) as the third letter so that rules out nervous tension. The h comes from backhand - the answer to " Shot in two parts of body" which I think must be right. Getting the two following would help enormously.
10ac Red nose , perhaps, that Continental got in fight (7) starts with b
12ac Approval given by merry socialsit in speech (4,5) starts with f
Any ideas, please?

12ac was full marks, I think. All the letters fit with other clues anyway. Thanks for skull. Mine is obviously empty!
