I have finished most of it but I am stuck on these last four. Maybe I have got something wrong somewhere!
1ac One who puts the earn into learn?(5,7)
p - - - - / - e - c - e - ( think the second word may be teacher?)
2d Capable body (5) - - s - e
3d Did they wear black togas? - - c - o - e
(These two start with the 3rd and 5th letters of 1ac)
23d Stage (5) l - v - e
Any suggestions gratefully received.

23d levee?
2d posse
1a pupil teacher?
3d Lactone?
Question Author
Thank you both.I am sure you are right on all counts. I think 3d must be 'lectors' as it is the only word that fits those letters but I cannot see why. Can anyone?
Sorry where does the s come from for Lectors?
Question Author
Lactone must have appeared while I was typing my response. It certainly fits but what does it mean? It does not seem to be in Chambers.
Lactone: One of a series of organic compounds, regarded as anhydrides of certain hydroxy acids. In general, they are colorless liquids, having a weak aromatic odor. They are so called because the typical lactone is derived from lactic acid.

Sorry that was a mistake on my part. It should be an s at the end.. The last letter comes from 'coddles' It could perhaps be coddled or coddler but cannot end with an e. I'll get a new pair of galsses!!!
Then Lectors would work, since Lector is a Latin Term for reader (togas) and is also a possible name of a university lecturer. Black Robes
