Hi Barbara, Could the first be (Paul) CULLEN (hardly a town)?
Second one sounds like KENDAL Green
cullen is a small fish port in scotland (cullen skink ) ?

It's hardly a village crofter, I was in Cullen bay last week! It was the first thing I thought of though

sorry crofter, I phrased that wrong....I meant it's bearly a village it's so small!
That's what I thought ~ judging from my AA Road Atlas!

However Paul CULLEN satisfies the clue.

It now depends on how rigorous the setter has been.
according to this it's a town alright

Crofter, it's a local quiz and they seem to make up the rules themselves!!! There are always spelling mistakes and the wrong number of letters given sometimes, but it is good fun none the less ;o)
In view of that ~ BRISTOL (7) and LIVERPOOL (9) could well be correct for the other two!
