This seems an exceptionally hard puzzle. If I could get these five long clues maybe I could finish it! Help please.
8ac The occupation of Mr Omer of Yarmouth (11)
(I thought he was an undertaker or funeral director but neither will fit)
17ac The result, if you do, might be a tonic (11) (3rd letter from end is i.)
27ac He should be a good judge of a lawn (11) li - e . . . . . . . but not at all sure of the l.
8d Wessex year-book? (5,6) 2nd word - - n - a l. Again not sure of l
9d Shows what an odd case it is (11)
10d Telephonic will-o'-the-wisp (5,6)

8a housekeeper
Question Author
The only info. I have about the crossword is 14 May 1948.
I am sure Hardy Annual and Housekeeper are right so thanks for those. I had thought of ignis fatuus but I now have 2 letters in the first word r - - h - .
9d now starts with k
the l at the start of 27ac is confirmed.
27 . Linendraper .
17 . Altercation .
I'm not convinced about housekeeper .
As well as being an undertaker Mr Omer was a haberdasher .
Intriguingly , "odd case it is" is an anagram of dissociated , but there any similarity with the clue ends .
Question Author
Thank you again. I, too, had doubts about housekeeper and had actually rubbed it out .
9d must be dissociated as it fits with 8, 17 and 17ac.
10d now has some letters r - - h - / n - - - - r
Could anyone help with 1d ? Attractive, and apparently successful (7) Begins with w
