Have the theme, the word to write underneath the grid and all but one of the unclued answers and all but one of the clued answers.
31 A -- Eddy upset assistant barman in Dublin. ( 6 )
***ate. The clue leads to the answer and an extra "L".
Assume it's either gyrate or rotate but could be completely wrong.
Unclued answer is ro*g*y. Third letter is second letter of 31A.
Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

The only word in Chambers that fits RO?G?Y is Roughy
For curate, Chambers says "... in Ireland, an assistant barman."
cur(l) and ate.

My apologies, you requested a hint - not the answer. Over-excited about the forthcoming excesses, I think.

Thanks both of you. I was looking at the wrong definition in the clue. I'd thought roughy given the general theme and its use in Australian slang.
Enjoy your Christmas.
After a long absence, have attempted this one but I'm rather stuck. Happy Christmas, hope you have enjoyed the excesses of the season. Only have the bottom RH corner fully complete and the rest is still a mystery. Suspect current alcohol consumption is to blame ....

Hi Physicsgirl!
I usually find alcohol consumption helps me finish EV!!!
If still stuck, look at title "Trapped". Think what animals race from traps ( TRAPS are first five extra letters ), what colours they wear ( in order ) and what they chase ( to be written under grid ). 8d and 26d are the two answers which need to be entered incompletely.
thanks, Novalis. Had twigged about the "traps" but that was late in the day yesterday, so will have another look today. Hope the season has been merry for you. Still have a lot of executing (will, not people!) to do but nearly there now, so new year should be quieter.
