This is a strange question, but believe me it has very deep philosophical under currents.

If, in a far fetched example, a messiah could say to you I can save a thousand dogs from being ill treated but in return I must take one small child from Wrexham as a sacrifice who will suffer intolerable cruelty for ever.

Or, say, he could stop the bloody french sticking tubes down goose necks in the name of some poncey pate, but will take the life of a Brazillian prostitute for doing so.

Or he would stop all barbaric halal killings but will take one Russian peasants life and torture him or her daily forever.

Is there a figure? Or is one human life worth the entire population of a species?

I have my own figure in mind, but this is solely dependant on the kind of human. I am just interested if others have a figure.

A morbid debate maybe, but a debate nonetheless.

I'm not sure it's a quantifiable debate either.

No, I don't think one childs life is worth that of a load of animals.

One human life of indiscriminate age/sex/race/creed/gender etc... to save the life of every on the planet? Probably.
I agree with you China Doll, although I personally think that animal life is very important, but without it, there'd be no food chain.
Take all the humans that perpetrate such barbaric acts to save all the above incidents and add to that butchered dolphins, lobsters boiled alive, clubbed seals etc etc.

I wouldn't even flinch....let those inhuman beings see what pain and suffering is all about
I enjoy a steak as much as the next man but I read recently that getting our protein from animals is 20 times less efficient than getting it from vegetables. Bit of a tangent but it mades me think. Perhaps it would be a bit easier to have a healthy balanced diet if the massive food corporations concentrated on providing humans with healthy balanced vegetarian ready meals and there were no animals left. I don't really value animals above humans but the effect of farming animals for profits has a serious knock on effect to our environment and I care more about that than animal welfare, however in that I stand on the side of the veggies as farming is bad for the planet. Bit of an oxymoron really isn't it?
No, first class protein comes from meat.
With respect, B.B., the true Messiah would never ask that question.
It is like a Nazi in a concentration camp asking a parent to choose which of the two children should die, because for certain, if a choice is not made then both will die.
What you propose is a manifestation of of evil, and maybe if asked, we should refuse to play the game.

i know it's a large article but it really made me think. Not that I'm wanting to give up meat or dairy but the cost to the planet is severe. Also I have recently been told I never grew out of my asthma and I read another article saying that dairy often produces an excess of mucus which can't be good for my granny lungs, but then smoking isn't too healthy either......
