On an episode of Stargate Jack is doing a crossword and he reads the clue out to Daniel - "up, down, charmed...." to which Daniel gives the answer "strange".

Can anyone explain this?

Quarks come in six flavours, and their names (up, down, strange, charm, bottom, and top) were also chosen arbitrarily based on the need to name them something that could be easily remembered and used.
