Switched on
Dreamy ...the alternate letters in ..DiRgE cAlMlY

erdie It is "Switched on". There should always be agreement as to the tense of all verbs. Since "Connected" is in the past tense, then so must the solution!

Also a person who is "switched on" is "clued up" & "up to speed"

The same is true of 22a, but this has the additional clue that you should read only the even letters of DiRgE cAlMlY! That is what is meant by "evenly" at the end.

shaneystar2 and crofter thanks for the help.

The reason I was thinking it may have been stitched is because the clue said "connected"

but on clue 22a where you say the clue states that you should read only the even letters, the ones that give you the answer are the odd letters

"DiRgE cAlMlY! That is what is meant by "evenly" at the end"

I wish I could find a guide to help with cryptic clues.

Thanks for the links. I do manage to muddle my way through some cryptic crosswords but often even though I get the answer and see the answers when they are printed I dont understand how they get them. Hopefully your links will help me understand a bit better.

Thanks

erdie

Sorry for the confusion erdie! You must have to start with the phrase "a dirge calmly" to get at the even letters.
erdie If I cannot fathom out why an answer applies to the given clue - then I ask! There's always a willing soul out there who will explain it!

Thanks for all your help. I will indeed ask for help in future. The reason that I have not in the past is because I did not know that this website existed until recently.
