12 ac: Fish caught by bore C?A? Much discussion on this last year, CHAR and CHAD, but still not totally convinced.

16d: Pass snakes close to house. E?A?S?. Looks like ELAPSE, but cannot parse - fits def and can see anagram of asp and close to house (E).

TIA

Elaps is an American genus of snakes

Previously parsed by LiK as

Chad ("shad"; Chambers) - 'c(aught)' + 'had' (past tense 'have'; 'bear' - 'bore')

12ac Chad, where c= caught, and bore= had as in bore/ had a child.
