I agree with Mallyh that "slippers" are'nt really a kitchen item, but I don't know what else
it would be?
I often wear slippers in the kitchen!

'Slipper' might be being used here as an old word for 'apron'. (One definition of 'slipper' given by the OED, citing Webster's Dictionary in the early part of the 19th century, is "A kind of apron for children, to be slipped over their other clothes to keep them clean").
thanks, i did lots of googling for alternative definitions of slipper but didn't find that
