As a relative newcomer I am often thrown by abbreviations in wordplay. For example in recent puzzles 80 became 'r' and Libya became 'lar'. Do I need to buy Chambers? In a recent puzzle an answer was lulibubs which I didn't solve because none of the websites I use had it - would Chambers have a word like this?

A Chambers does help, to be sure. Although some of the more common abbreviations can be sourced from other places, it helps to have that single reference: If it isn't in C. (I think there is one other allowed reference that isn't already stated, I can't remember which though -- concise Oxford maybe>), then it's either not allowed or must be indicated in the...

Chambers gives it as an early form of lollipop
lulibubs does, indeed, appear to be a valid word:

I'm not familiar with the Listener crossword. Do you find these abbreviations only in that crossword?
What was the qn?

It's helpful to remember that Medieval Roman Numerals are a common usage, as are IVR codes, which explain both of your examples.
Libya was for a while Libyan Arab Republic (LAR) but I can't figure out why R should be 80
A Chambers dictionary can help but I don't find it necessary for most crosswords
Elliemae, the clue was....

Early sweets are from sillabub, toffy nuts (8).
80 may be r because 80 is a rational number ??https://www.enotes.com/homework-help/what-do-the-letters-r-q-n-and-z-mean-in-math-195625
Thanks NAC, that makes sense
Chambers gives R as 'symbol, medieval Roman numeral, 80'.
^ though the online Anagram solver doesn't give 'lulibubs'
Sorry, I have just noticed that Jim supplied the medieval stuff, R, earlier. It was the 'rational number' post that prompted mine.
