Good day,
I gave this one a rest for a while, and am now back at it.
I am still stumped by these two:

40 (A) Old vessel, mostly outdated, heading north (5): ??E?N
( Can't find the 5-letter word for "outdated" )
33(D) Ray is kilometres into gorge (5): ??A?E

Verification for the following, please:

1 (A)Precise conjecture about coin-flip, oddly (8): S?????I? ( SYNOPTIC )
35(D) Finished piercing fry I let off the hook (8): ?A???NER ( FASTENER }

Definitely not your week, Matakari! I think the whole puzzle's been solved on AB.
They look like spoonerisms so change the first letters of the pairs you have to find the other pairs

E.g. frying pan = prying fan?
I gave answers because all the big hints earlier didn't seem to have helped...

Thanks for coming to the rescue again, NACW! I saw some of these answers, but could not believe my eyes! The nature of spoonerisms!
Thanks, Matakari. I'm surprised that you were surprised at the Spoonerisms - we've had many of them (too many for me) over the years. I thought you'd rattle them off once the theme had been explained last week!
