All my older female relatives were mill girls,card frame tenters and the like, sparking clogs as they went :-)
Halifax Rugby League ground was called Thrum Hall when I was a child.(maybe still is).
Perhaps there is a connection somewhere?
Halifax was more Wool, Bolton was largely Cotton Mills.

Many of the terms traverse the two of course.
