We have just chosen a rotweiller cross puppy from our local ncdl rescue centre. Looking at photos on the net of rotti puppies, the cross we'e chosen is much slimmer with a long tail, but the colouring is the same as a rott. Before we pick him up next weekend, would love to hear from anyone who has a rotti cross to find out its size when grown, temperment etc.

Depends entirely on what the other breed is that it is crossed with. The tail is long because Rotts are docked. Most black and tan breeds have more or less the same markings - from a Chihuahua to a Rottie, they have tan in the same places.

Temperament can be helped by you taking it to training classes and socialising well from an early age, both with people and other dogs. If they have others from the litter, it may be that they know what the mother/father is, depending on which one is the Rott. It could even be a purebred Rott, but if not from a good breeder, it could just be a poor specimen. I am sure you will love it all the same and have years of enjoyment. Don't over exercise it as a baby, give it time to grow before you let it exert itself. Feed a good quality puppy food until it is at least a year old to help it grow properly. Give it plenty of things to chew to help it through teething (and to stop it chewieng your things!). Invest in a crate (cage) so it has somewhere of its own to sleep and you can take it with you if you travel anywhere, and also in the car. Enjoy!

He could grow to be any size, depending on his background. I know two rottie crosses. One lab X who is the size and shape of a lab with a big rottie head and one terrier X who is short with huge big ears and a long body!! As for temperament, thats up to you to work with the dog as much as you can, getting him socialized to everything.

We have a 9 month old Rottweiler-Labrador Retriever mix. She is:
a) all black
b) not afraid of anything or anyone
c) intelligent, yet head-strong
d) independent in nature, yet always ready to cuddle
e) an absolute doll
f) shown here: Rudie

Hi

thankyou for responses to question on rotti cross, to Ezapf, would you have any photos you could forward of Rudie as a young pup, so I can compare looks.

Unfortunately, we lost loads of photos to a hard drive crash.
Only one photo of Rudie survived from when she was a tiny pup (artwork added by Brawburd):

thank you so much for the photos, is the mother the labrador? The pup we are having has a very similar looking face but all the colouring of a rotti - brown and black and wrinkley face.
Think the mother was the lab, but can't remember for sure. The original owner said there were eight pups in the litter - some all brown, some brown and black. Rudie was the only all black and the only one my wife and I saw. The guy carried the pup into my wife's place of business and asked if anyone would take her. So we did.
Congratulations and good luck with the new pup!

we have a rottweiler x we got from a rescue home, about 4 yrs old we think n not sure what crossed with but is a bit bigger than a lab with a longer lab face than a rotty. is a very people friendly dog, can be quite boisterous, n has a thing for going after some little doggies, never attacks them, just seems to like chasing n barking them like a bit of a bully.

if u get one as a puppy tho the way it behaves will be pretty much up to u, don't really need a great deal of exercise i don't think two reasonable walks a day, n a bit of messing n mental stimulation.

Question Author
thanks for your reply, has your dog got the colouring of a rotti? Did you have it from a puppy?
ours has the rottie colouring with the brown n black, we got ours when it was around 3/4 yrs old so have been re-training n socialising it since. but i oersonally think u'll be alright temperament wise, just need to socialise it with other puppies at training classes n take it for walks in town when its old enough so it gets used to people. they are good natured n loving dogs, though can be selectively deaf when they want to be lol

I would appreciate any advice, having now got our pup home, I am finding night times a real problem. He will sleep a max of 4 hours before whining for as long as you leave him. I then go and reassure him and if needed, replace his wee wee mat.I left him in his cage for 2 hrs today while I did my food shop only to return to a very messy cage and puppy!!!! Help, any tips on how to settle him and not having to spring clean a pup and cage after leaving him for a while in the day????

A bit lengthy and focused, but read through this carefully and you will get a good idea why he acts the way he does and what you can do about it.

Puppies take patience but, looking back, they really do learn quickly and they are worth training properly.

thank you for all the advice everyone, yet again i am on the scrounge for info..

Having had our puppy for 1 week, 2 days, he has been admitted to the vets with suspected parvo. The day we had him he had a very bad cough which we were told was typical kennel cough. But it has worsened over the week and he became weaker and weaker, not eating but being sick nevertheless and having diarrhoa. When we took him to the vet today they did inform us that they also have his 2 brothers in for the same condition but they were alot worse. What is this infection???

Interested in any update, lynneylou.
How is the pup?

Hi there

Tyler is doing really well, he has had his last jab and has been on a couple of really short walks, but over christmas it has been too cold for us to take him out. Happy new year to all that have offered advice, and thanks alot.

Glad to hear the good news.
Happy new year to you, too.

Don't know if you could suggest anything, Tyler is very unenthusiastic to go on a walk from our front door. We took him on a longesh walk at the weekend in the car and he loved it, but to go walking from our home he digs his paws down and will not move even if coaxed with a treat. I took him out the other day and the 25 minute walk took over an hour as he wouldn't walk more than a couple of paces before stopping???
