//Sir Elton John has defended the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's use of private jets - and said he paid to carbon offset their trip to his French home.//

Does this mean that given the financial resources to donate a significant amount to green projects, we may all fly around the world at will with a clear conscience? Since eco warriors the Duke & Duchess of Sussex, both eager to lecture the rest of us on our moral duty to address global warming by moderating our lifestyles, have no problem with Elton’s beneficence, one can only assume that money is the answer. However, rationally, regardless of any donation we may make, the actual pollution our journeys create is still exacerbating the problem – isn't it?

Of course it would be better to limit your (their) CO2 producing activities AND help fund schemes to reduce greenhouse gases if you have surplus wealth.
Naomi, are you suggesting that all air travel should be banned?
no, Sir EJ has merely paid to shift the blame to someone poorer.
"with a clear conscience?"

My green conscience is always clear because i recycle my bean tins.
true reduction in footprint requires true reduction in the activities that contribute to said footprint.
Something Something yeah but china?
We`d do better by boycotting Brazilian wood supplies to protect the rainforests. Paying to plant new trees wont make up for that kind of devastation.
No. Every little helps but better to plant your trees or whatever and not add carbon too.

Problem is as time goes by the demands on the public to live as peasants seem more extreme. Now it's no beef or lamb, no private transport. What will they unreasonably try to inflict next ? Comes a point when one desensitises to more and more unacceptable demands and it starts going in one ear and out the other with most. If they can't stick with practical suggestions then we're doomed anyway.

I did wonder why the media thought Elton sticking his oar in was worth reporting. After all, what's special about some celeb's opinion. Seems he was more involved than I realised.

danny, //Naomi, are you suggesting that all air travel should be banned? //

Where on earth did you get that idea? I can't see anything in my OP to suggest that.
It should never be a case of big men telling us to stop buying.

The big men need to stop selling.
why chop away at toes when you can slice off the head.
Naomi, // the actual pollution our journeys create is still exacerbating the problem – isn't it?
Sorry, I thought that was what you were suggesting.

Danny, any flight creates pollution – and that doesn’t disappear simply because Elton John has dug deep into his pockets in order, presumably, to attempt to negate the hypocrisy of those blathering on about saving the planet whilst doing nothing practical to help to achieve that.
Elton doesn't care about the climate issue, he cares about Harry and Meghans security.
I mean.. Im sure elton does care about the environment and climate, but i'm sure he cares more for his celebrity relations.

When we get on flights to holidays once a year, do we really think "Oh gosh i'm such a bad person?" No. Mainly because we get flights once a year. People who get private jets and flights around willy nilly should be more to blame, but still.. You can't expect royalty to fly BMIbaby economy can ya?
Naomi, The article in the Mail about Elton John came from him writing to them about their criticism of Harry's spending and an implication that it came from public funds.
Question Author
danny, that's irrelevant. The point is Elton John's generosity doesn't eradicate the huge 'carbon footprint' they're creating. They have no business preaching to anyone about 'saving the planet'.
Naomi, considering the many thousands of commercial jets that take off from airports every day, why pick on Harry's use of a jet which in comparison is a drop in the ocean?
But as public figures should they not promote the health of our planet, even if they aren't the best examples themselves?

Especially as the climate / planets environment and health is a very hot topic at the moment. Pardon my pun. How fantastic am I.
"why pick on Harry's use of a jet which in comparison is a drop in the ocean? "

"Private jets usually carry fewer passengers than commercial planes, meaning they burn much more fuel per person per hour."

Iz in da paperz
Danny that's like saying why pick on a car driver when there are so many buss' about. It's better to take public transport and lift share. Private Jets are literally the opposite of a public transport lift share.
