It's been a while since I posted one of these - my new life in Kerry has many, many good points, but access to quality wine at sensible prices is not one of them - thank heavens for Mr Aldi and Mr Lidl for at least keeping the flame alive.

Just three quick recommendations :

1. This was an Aldi special for Father's Day - if they've still got any left then 'fill yer boots' :

Probably the best wine for its price I've drunk this year - if it was £14.99 from Waitrose it would still be decent value and people would be raving over it.

A wonderful mixed palate of berries and cherries - with some real long-lasting aftertastes of bubble-gum and dark chocolate - drink with Roast Dinner and/or charred BBQ offerings.

2. My current staple plonk - a steal at £7.99

Not a wine for the faint hearted - big and powerful - not subtle but a lovely mouthful of ripe flavours. Drink with cheese and biscuits after dinner.

3. You shouldn't be able to buy Beaujolais Village for under about £9 - not unless it's awful. But this is just £5.99 and it's ... pretty good.

A light, fruity red for drinking with fish/salads - or lightly chilled as an aperitif on a hot afternoon

Tesco Fruity Red at £3.65 a bottle is outstanding value.Recommended by Ossie Clark.
Sorry, that should be Oz Clarke.

I’ll have a look next time I’m in Killarney Tesco, Danny - even with the added tax for Ireland it should still be a good price.
I had a lovely Ventoux from Aldi the other week, a bargain at only £5.99.

I’ll have a look in my local Aldi, LadyCG - not everything makes it across the Irish Sea - but I do like French wines from the South.
Aldi
do a sauvignon gris apparently

sauvignon wivva a pinky shade which colours the white wine and gives a different flavveeeerrrrr.
killarney suny save
we will have to start calling you - Killarney Barney
my finds are the Chateau Moulin de Curat from Puisseguin in the St Emilion, at £14 in Waitrose with lovely classic Bordeaux structure and flavours.

And, if you can find it, a Vila Nova from Portugal...a stunning wine with a rich viognier flavour, then quite minerally but then one hell of an after-taste in being long and intense, pleasantly so, £9 from a specialist shop down here in Falmouth - one of the best Portuguese wines I have had and I've been there enough times on business....
But I'm told the draught Guiness in Ireland is far superior to what we get in England. You can't win 'em all ;-)
Question Author
The draught Guinness here is indeed much superior to the British version - the only time I've ever had the full 'Irish' quality outside of the Emerald Isle was (weirdly) in a bar in Tavira (Portugal).

...and Lidl has 25% off six or more bottles from Thursday 4July (for one week).

(as does Asda at the moment).

Crikey - that's a good offer, ginge - don't think it's happening in the Irish stores though :(
I shall have to call in at Aldi next week :-)
