After much enjoyable digging, I think I managed to locate the footpath and all the mentioned abbeys, though not the earthwork of the priory, and the castle is large enough to be marked on my map. We've been in this neck of the woods before: I had already drawn a few circles on my map from previous expeditions.
Near the castle there's a village whose name always makes me smile: sounds like a spinster aunt from an Agatha Christie novel :)

The Meaning of Liff defines the name of the village near the castle as "The almost-completely-forgotten girlfriend from your distant past for whom your wife has a completely irrational jealousy and hatred" :-D

Ha ha, yes, maybe she had a relationship in the past with Boothby Graffoe....
Only just began to look at it. Are we in Lincolnshire?

Yep
Mr F is getting his money's worth on "trails" again . . . though not as devious as last week 's suggestion that the proposed car park works over the Cherwell was in Oxford when Banbury was the actual location.

This week took quite a bit of close scrutiny of the OS Map to come up with the places mentioned since there are quite a few remains of Abbey and Priory earthworks in the area on or near the suggested route taken by the puzzler. One village, in particular, has two sites named the same - one the country house - the other - simply the remains of earthworks a tad South.

The spinster and her possible dalliance partner references made me chuckle - thanks GG and Etch!
