The diplomat is (I think)Van Sittart but how it's made into a 13 letter word, I am not yet sure. Vansittartite?
Does anyone know the answer to "US prisons"? 8 letters beginning with H. I can't track down anything. The only other one I haven't got yet is "Rawhide used for strapping and laces" Begins with B and has 7 letters. But I haven't searched much for that one yet.

US prison - Hoosegow
US prisons - hoosegow is the singular form but is 8 letters
the rawhide one is Babiche

Well, being Didymus, he'll have found some obscure speeling. But that's a great help in tracking it down. Thank you
And it's just occurred to me that the rawhide one might be buffalo.
I'll try to see if I can get it all to fit....
steven
Or "spelling", as we say in English!
the rawhide one is definitely babiche
surgical instrument - scarificator http://www.thefreedictionary.com/scarificator
Thank you gangesboy! That's a great help.
I think Didymus's obscure spelling might be "husegow". Certainly I have found a couple of quotes using that spelling.
steven
But I still can't think of the 13 letter word from Vansittart. Vansittartees? Vansitttarters?
Help gratefully received
Steven
Possible! But it makes my suggested " husegows" wrong as it gives an e where the s of ism comes. Search on....
Steven
^ spelling :-)
I think "contraversial" could be polemical.
Has anyone got N - "Spencer's never the more"? or T - "an Aussie or US DJ"?
Letter counts ?
