It's a setter's debut this week, as EV welcomes Ranunculus to its list of setters. Some interesting clues and a clever denouement, that took me a long time to spot, so thanks for the workout Ranunculus and let's see if he has any more to offer for us in future.

I'm still baffled by the endgame. I've solved all the clues and got the quote, but I still haven't got a clue what to do. is it anything to do with the Masons?

No, not really, the Mason link is a red herring.
Thanks Jim, I'll have to think of something else then.
If A and B are the last two words of the quote, look at Bs of the grid where you'll find some A words. These can be made into something much more familiar. Think "compass" to describe the Bs. Probably given far too much away.
Thought I had lost this one, but found crumpled in back pocket of jeans and just finished. Very enjoyable. Particularly liked 17d and 22a.
