-3x =5
so 3x=-5
so x= -5/3
3x=12-7
3x=5
x=5/3
I'm not sure that's meant to be a minus sign after the colon, factor
Well if the - is not a minus sign then the answer is as andres says

Thank you for you replies.
However we thought the answer to 'x'could be +2.
ie: 3 (+2) + 7 = 12
3x means '3 times x' not '3 plus x'

So the '-' in the question wasn't a minus sign?
^ 3x is (3 times x) not (3 plus x)
