Another TLS crossword where you are forced to flip a coin!

7d Record " male goddess of art" as Nero's secretary (12)

?P?P?R?D?T?S

The lead spelling for the male goddess of art seems to be Epaphroditus, whilst the lead spelling for Nero's secretary seems to be Epaphroditos, although both spelling seem to be alternatives for both meanings.

I am tired of spending time solving this crossword and then getting one wrong answer because of the poor crossword editing.

Does anyone know which alternative The Times Crossword Club is accepting as correct?

Thanks in advance.

I thought
record=EP
Aphroditus=male form of aphrodite
http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aphroditus
So Epaphroditus.
Both spellings for Nero's secretary seem to be OK.

I rarely bother checking online, so can't confirm.

Thanks for your reply, slaney.

Both answers ARE correct.

I need someone who completes the TLS in The Times Crossword Club. I know its cheating to ask but week after week I complete the crossword and almost one week in two, solvers have to plump between alternatives and we complain in the forum, but, it keeps happening.

I keep saying to myself I won't bother solving the crossword, but week after week I come back!
Ahh - I see - I have now found Aphroditos as well.
Well I have now submitted it with as EPAPHRODITUS - the commonest spelling- it says successfully submitted - does that mean I have got it right?

Hi slaney.

You've submitted it on The Times Crossword site? You should be on the leader board, with no or one wrong answer.
If you read the "stats" on there , it would seem the Roman answer is correct (see barracuda)
As I filled it in in two minutes copying from a pre-filled in grid I opted to be not on the leaderboard.
I thought I would get some kind of message saying whether it was correct or not.
Sorry! Not any help to you at all.
Thanks Roslyn - it did seem to be a Roman or Greek choice.

I've used the U version - which I take to be the Roman version and still got one wrong so have I got another answer wrong?

I think you could read barracudas entry either way. He could have meant it literally or sarcastically. He is in the top ten so perhaps he thought it was the Roman version AND it was or he put in the Greek version and was surprised because it wasn't the Roman version. Who knows?

Do you agree that this crossword is a bit of a lottery, roslyn??

I enjoy doing the crossword anyway, slaney.

But as someone who is toying with retiring in the next few months, I like the idea of winning a few pounds here and there from crosswords as a small income stream no matter how small or infrequent. Even just to get a nice surprise in the post every now and then.
yes - you are right - on several occasions there have been "choices" and I invariably pick the wrong one!!
Haven't submitted this one yet - will report back later!!
Retirement is wonderful GetOverIt - I only took up this crossword malarky when I'd given up the day job.
submitted with a "us" ending and it was correct!
